Fifteen minutes east of downtown Nashville, the most family-friendly, activity-packed lake in the Nashville area spans 14,000 acres of outdoors fun. The artificial lake, made by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and completed in 1968, provides opportunities for boating, camping, fishing, horseback riding, picnicking, birding, swimming, hiking, biking, and lots of other water sports. The lake is a perfect setting for a summer’s day or an autumn stroll through the beautiful surrounding acreage.
There are 11 picnic areas, three campgrounds, six marinas, and 12 boat ramps.
The reservoir is contained by the Percy Priest Dam and was constructed to control the flooding of the Stones River. The building project was finished in 1968. The dam and lake are named in honor of Congressman James Percy Priest of Tennessee.
