Narrows of the Harpeth State Park

1254 Narrows of the Harpeth Rd, Kingston Springs, TN

The Narrows of the Harpeth State Park describe the narrow, winding Harpeth River that floats through towering limestone cliffs, forests, and features one of the oldest man-made tunnels in the United States. The 40-mile river system has been a main attraction for kayaking, canoeing, fishing and hiking. Besides the water activities, Harpeth State Park is most notable known for the Montgomery Bell Tunnel.

The Montgomery Bell Tunnel, also called the Patterson Forge Tunnel, is a 290-foot man-made tunnel which was built for industrial purposes of the iron-manufacturing operation, Patterson Ford. Montgomery Bell built the tunnel as a means to fuel the process of producing wrought iron with hydropower. The tunnel can be accessed by two hiking trails: the Bluff Overlook trail and the Harris-Street Bridge trail. The gliding “steps” of the entrance to the tunnel frames a beautiful waterfall remaining from the Patterson Forge operation.
